If your dog licks you, it's not always a sign of affection: ways to tell

Many of us have experienced the pleasure of receiving affectionate licks from our four-legged friends, but it is important to know that this gesture is not always a sign of love and gentleness.

Today we will explore different scenarios in which dog licking behaviour could have different meanings. Whether it is to show affection, or to express a situation of discomfort, there are many different motivations behind this gesture. Dogs communicate with us through their body language, and their licking can be a valuable indicator of their mood and intentions.

We will learn how to correctly interpret the language of dog licking and understand when it might be appropriate to intervene or respond accordingly.

Lack of attention
If you are working at the computer without giving your dog any attention for a long time, and he comes up and licks you, what he is probably trying to communicate to you is more than just 'I love you'. Much more likely it is because he is getting bored, and is seeking attention from you: he wants to play or he wants to be cuddled, this depends on the dog's character.

Hunger
A hungry dog that wants to make its owner realise its need may decide to lick you. In this way he attracts your attention, reminding you that he exists, and in the hope that you will remember (or decide) to feed him at that very moment.

Discomfort
According to some dog educators, in some cases dogs lick to express discomfort, such as peeing. Not all dogs bark to ask out, some adopt different behaviours, including licking.

Demonstration of affection
Yes, dogs lick to show their affection. This is true in certain situations, i.e. when there is no other underlying reason for the dog to lick. If you have just arrived home or are quiet on the sofa watching television and the dog licks you, it is probably just telling you that it loves you and is happy to be with you.
